Duke of Edinburgh Award
Duke of Edinburgh's Award
A Duke of Edinburgh's Award is so much more than a 'pat on the back' for completing a programme of activities. It is recognition of a young person’s successful journey of self-discovery and development, renowned by employers and universities for the qualities young people who achieve a DofE Award develop. Its balanced programme develops the whole person - mind, body and soul, in an environment of social interaction and team working.
At Highworth Warneford School, students from year 9 onwards have the opportunity to complete the Bronze award, encompassing a two-day expedition in Savernake Forest in mid-April. Students who complete their Bronze award in year 9 or 10 can then go on to the Silver award level.
Any young person can do their DofE. Achieving an Award isn’t a competition or about being first. It’s all about setting personal challenges and pushing personal boundaries.
Through a DofE programme young people have fun, make friends, improve their self-esteem and build confidence. They gain essential skills and attributes for work and life such as resilience, problem-solving, team-working, communication and drive.
There are four sections to complete at Bronze and Silver level. They involve helping the community/environment, becoming fitter and healthier, developing new skills, planning, training for and completing an expedition.
All of these awards require students to undertake an expedition for which training, practice and qualifying expeditions are organised by the school using an external Authorised Activity Provider.
The Bronze Award takes 6 months to complete and the Silver Award takes 6-12 months depending on whether the previous award has been completed.
